Through a labyrinth of palm trees and boulders you can find water and even some sand. This is the only tropical beach I've been to that I didn't really care about the beach itself. The caves and tunnels of rock and sand that have been formed here are so mind-blowing that you might even forget to go swimming.
Just a short drive north from Jacksonville there is an amazing state protected salt marsh. Amelia Island borders the state park, but you're going to think you're still in the middle of preserved land. The whole area is covered will rolling sand dunes, palm trees, spanish moss and seashells. If you plan on taking a vacation at Amelia Island you should go ahead and start mentally preparing yourself that you will eventually have to leave.
You don't need to bring an beach umbrella with you during a swell, but absolutely bring a chair. In August, Hurricane Bill passed Long Island on its way to Canada, and we decided to go see how a 15 foot swell would affect our go to spot. There was no beach - the water was coming all the way to the dunes. The sheer power of the ocean was mind blowing - both intimidating and beautiful all at once.
This beach is great if you want to get away from the city. Everyday here is like a vacation. It cost a few bucks to park in the lot, but its worth every penny when you pile eight of your closest friends in the car and make a full day out of the sunshine and sand.
If you're on St. John at all you're going to pretty stoked no matter what you do or where you go. With about seventy percent of the island devoted to a National Park St John is a beautiful place. The Island's edge is littered with bays, coves and beaches. I spent some quality time at Hawksnest Bay.
If you want a gorgeous beach, then you could skip rockaway. If you want some character with your sun, then get in this sand. Rockaway is consistent with its surf, and is the easiest beach to get to from Manhattan.
Definitely the most remote beach I've been on. You need to find someone with a boat in Utila that will take you. Bring anything you would need for the day cause there is absolutely nothing on the island but palm trees.
